A chamber flag, also called a chamber safety flag, is a visible indication that a firearm has been cleared and the flag is in place. The flag design and required use depend on the firearm and discipline. Always follow the event, range and firearm manufacturer’s instructions.
IBU competition rules use a safety marker (coloured flag or lock) when rifles enter the competition stadium. The Finnish Biathlon Association’s national competition rules also have a dedicated chamber-flag section; the 2026–27 rule package took effect on 1 July 2026.
The Finnish Shooting Sport Federation’s 2026 technical rules specify bright-coloured safety flags for rifles and pistols in particular firing-line and competition situations (rule 6.2.2.2). Check the current rules for your own discipline.
The Finnish Hunters’ Association field shooting rules list a chamber flag or safety line as one way to indicate a firearm’s safe condition in situations where the bolt is not removed. Club event instructions may add details.

When correctly installed, it visibly indicates that the empty chamber has been checked and the flag is in place. The flag alone does not prove a firearm is unloaded or replace safe handling practices.
This depends on the flag and firearm design. The stem of this product goes into the empty chamber according to the firearm manufacturer’s and discipline’s instructions, leaving the flag visible.
